Learn more about Statue of Liberty NYC
The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986. Thousands of people visit daily. Wait times and lines greater than 90 minutes are commonplace when purchasing tickets and boarding ferries. The Statue of Liberty is made of copper the thickness of two pennies put together. The Statue's copper has naturally oxidized to form its familiar green coating. The Statue is 305 ft tall from the ground to the tip of the flame. It is the height of a 22-story building. In 1886, it was the tallest structure in New York.
