The New Amsterdam Theater first opened in 1903, but after is final production, "Roberta", it was converted to a movie house in 1937. Fortunately, the Nederlander Organization bought the theatre in 1982, but it wasn't until 1997 when the Walt Disney Company became the owners that the theatre was finally reconstructed and reopened with the musical production "King David", then in 1998 "The Lion King". Seating capacity is 1,747. As one of the Great White Way Broadway Theaters, this theater is located in the famous Broadway Theater District, home to over 40 theaters within a 10 block strip of Manhattan (from 53rd Street to 42nd Street, between 6th and 8th Avenues).
